Breathing in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) its a conscious process. Calves have to learn when to breath when they are diving. Their mothers teach them to do so by taking them to the surface every 2 to 3 minutes, while they remain underwater for as long as 20 minutes. This calf is following his mother in a new dive after taking breath in the surface. During the winter months, humpback whales migrate from polar to tropical seas, such as the Caribbean. There they give birth to their calves in the warm waters. This photo was taken in Silver Bank (Dominican Republic)
